Today we welcomed Ruth and Cathal, our local water officers as guest speakers from our Local Authority on Water. We discussed identifying our Water catchment area, rivers within this area, identifying pollutants of waterways and identifying to what degree our local river is polluted. The children also learnt about how to do a 'Kick Sampling' experiment that allows for the investigation and identification of both good bugs and bad bugs in a sample of water which in turn determines the quality of the water in the sample taken. We ended our information session with a Water Quiz about what the children had learned today.
5th and 6th Class conducted an experiment to test for nitrates and phosphates in a sample of water taken from the River Shannon which would identify pollutants in the sample.
