We are very fortunate to be one of the primary schools in Co. Meath participating in the STEAM Meath Initiative, supported by META. This initiative strives to ignite creativity, enhance pupils innovative skills and transform STEAM education. This past academic year our junior infants to 2nd class have engaged with First Lego League; the Lego Discovery programme and our 3rd - 6th class pupils have engaged with the Lego Explore programme; Lego Spike. Junior Infants - 2nd class also engaged with 'Six Bricks' activities which support the development of pupils' memory, movement and creativity.
These programmes have given pupils a fun opportunity to discover the world of STEAM and how it links across the curriculum and to our daily lives as well as gaining the opportunity to develop key life skills including teamwork, innovation, collaboration, confidence and persistence along with design thinking and programming skills all through the use of the range of hands-on and engaging LEGO Education resources.
We held our showcase on the 14th of June and it was an exceptionally successful event where our pupils could share their learning, creativity and designs with pupils from other classes. We also welcomed parents to view the showcase and to listen to the pupils share their ideas and designs. Thank you also to the staff of Creative Hut who organise and support this initiative and provide professional learning opportunities to the staff. Thank you also to Rob from Creative Hut for joining us for the showcase and presenting our pupils with their participation certificates and some lego medals.
Participation in this programme was the foundation of our school annual Digital Learning plan this year as it links with the Digital Learning Framework and also with the aims of the New Primary Maths Curriculum for Maths learning experiences to be playful, hands-on and rich in opportunities to develop Maths talk and language.
