March Whole School Assembly 2024

15th Mar 2024

Our assembly today was a beautiful, colourful assembly as the children celebrated Lá glas and dressed in green clothes.  We began our assembly with 1st and 2nd class who taught us about a famous artist called Wassily Kandinsky.  The children studied Kandinsky's work and designed their own Kandinsky's inspired artwork, which they shared with the whole school.  The children used different mediums to complete their artwork, ranging from paint, watercolour, pastels and markers.  The children enjoyed creating their own concentric circles the most.

Next, we celebrated Seachtain na Gaeilge.  Junior and Senior infants impressed the school with their performances of 'I'm a little Leprechaun', 'Seamróg Glas' and 'Lá Le Padraig'.  First and Second class were up next and they have been learning about Phelim's little boat and where it travelled to, and how it came to a sad end one day.  They sang the song 'Báidín Fhelimí' beautifully.  After, Mr Buckley taught us all about Gráinne Mhaol and how she was able to become a pirate amd help protect Ireland.  Fifth and Sixth class sang 'Óró  sé do bheatha abhaile',  a song that was written about Gráinne Mhaol and shows great respect to her.  Finally our collection of Irish songs was brought to a close by third and fourth class, who sang our National Anthem, 'Amhrán na bhFainn'.  All these beautiful songs can be listened in the videos below.
The senior classes in our school took part in a webinar and learned all about the history of St Patrick.  Rory and Danny were able to recall many interesting facts from it and tell the Junior classesall about it.
Finishing off our Seachtain na Gaeilge celebrations was Teagan from Mr Buckley's class.  Teagan dressed in her fabulous Irish dancing costume, which is unique to her dancing group and she showed the whole school her Irish dancing skills, which she has won many awards for!  She has been privileged enough to showcase her Irish dancing skill in Disneyland Paris, in France.  Well done Teagan and thank you for dancing for us.

This week we have also been celebrating World Book Day.  Everyone across the school took part in lots of different activities and many children got dressed up as their favourite book character.  A lot of fun and lots of reading took place.  A special hamper was presented to Abbey Dalton who has been sharing her love of reading and can give good reviews on many books she has read.  She loves to read at any opportunity and has even been spotted on yard reading!  Keep up the great work Abbey.

Next week will be our last week before we break up for the Easter holidays.  Mrs Madden recalled the special days and events leading upto the special celebration on Easter Sunday.  The boys and girls will be learning more about this over the next week.

First and Second class took part in a 'Fit 4 Class' programme and successfully completed the 10week course of getting our body and mind fit and ready for class.  The boys and girls had lots of fun completing the various activities and they were presented with their certificates in todays assembly.  Certificate's were also presented to Fifth class who completed the 'Friends for life' programme with Mrs Madden and to Second class who completed the 'Fun Friends' programme, also with Mrs Madden.  Well done to all these boys and girls who worked hard and listened well to each other and successfully completed these programmes.

We ended our assembly inside with a reminder that World Down Syndrome Day will be celebrated on March 21st.  We most likely know someone who celebrates this day because it a cause so close to their heart, and it continues to be a special day for many people in our school.  It is important that we continue to acknowledge and celebrate this special day.

Finally, the whole school went outside to close the celebrations with ceilí dances.  We all clapped and tapped to the beat of the ceilí songs and dances that every class got to perform to.  Watch and clap along to St. Joseph's ceilí dances in the videos.
